Description
le Lion de Belfort.
sculpted and constructed by Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), father of the statue of Liberty in New York, honours the stubborn resistance by 16,000 armed citizens who, during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, defended this portion of France's national soil after the surrender signed by the French government.
An imposing symbol of the City of Belfort and its citizens ever since its construction was completed in 1880, the Lion watches, eloquently and with monumental stature, over the plain of the Belfort Gap.
11 metres high (12 yards)
x 22 metres long (24 yards).
